One must pass a lengthy (all day) test called the series 7. Some states have additional requirements. There are "cram" courses which generally last a week or so designed to help you pass the test. A large firm generally trains you with a small salary to pass the test (all of this training lasts two to three months)...this is the best way to go. First year incomes are low...about 25-35K. After 5 years, "average" brokers are making 65-110k. After 10 years, average brokers are making 100-175K. Above average brokers can make much more. Keep in mind that most candidates do not make it to the 5 or 10 year mark, so that those who "survive" are the ones making the money.

To get hired, you need a sales background, and an idea as to how you will get clients.
