I don't quite understand what Computer Aided Drafting and Geographic Information Systems are... Explain?

We Answered:

CAD can be a lot of things, but it is mostly tangible, buildable things. You can design gas / oil plants, skyscrapers, boats, furniture, whatever floats your boat. With CAD you can do some mapping, but it isn't as reliable as GIS

GIS is mapping. Think of a modern cartographer. (At least, that's my experience in using GIS). GIS can, utilizing maps, show - in scale - roads, pipeling, railroads, building locations, etc. and also have the terrain showing behind it. Will show terrain elevations, obstacles, etc.

I work in Natural Gas, and we use our GIS guys for showing where pipelines and plants are located, the terrain around it, other structures, etc. The State loves them! We use CAD to design the plants, draw the pipeline, and actaully put together the structures based on those drawings.

What kind of job are you doing? Would you be wanting to get the degree to try & make more money with the job your currently doing? It should help increase your salary. Are you able to get any type of financial help... like grants.... or federal student loans?
