Alan Said:

Is it possible for someone with spina bifida NOT to have a learning disability?

We Answered:

There are 3 forms of spina bifida.. one where the spine is completely left open there is a gap.. that is the most dangerous and the most common those people are mentally very impaired but there is also a form of spina bifida where the spinal cord is not open and those people have no learning disabilities which is spina bifida occulta. they don't need treatment.... it is a birth defect on the embryo.. they are born with this defect.. With Spina bifida occulta they can lead normal lifes... it's the form of spinal bifida where the spine is left uncovered.. that is hard.. they can still live but that is a big operation .. the others can lead almost normal lives.. they can work.. but have some health problems... xxx

Division of Vocational Rehabilitation?

We Answered:

My boys are involved with voc-rehab. They are 19 and both have Asperger's. It is an involved process that takes time. Because of their disabilities and the other programs they are involved with they are supposed to be a level one priority. They have gone through the interview process and are on a waiting list. When the space come open they will work with a job counselor who will try to help them find a job they will enjoy. For one of my boys that means a job at the airport. (He is obsessed with airplanes) for the other it will hopefully involve art or computers. They have been on the wit list for several months, so the process is long.....
