Vocational Rehab Counselor

Jim Said:

Is Vocational Rehab Counselor a good job?

We Answered:

A vocational rehab counselor works with the disabled to help them find jobs, arrange for modified housing, acquire prosthetics, get physical therapy, mental health therapy, transportation, whatever a person needs who has lost a limb or in some other way been injured and lost function. They also counsel them to help them adapt to their new life and new restrictions. Most VRCs find the job extremely rewarding. They make on average between $50k and $64k. The Department of Veterans Affairs hires quite a few because of the need to assist veterans who have been injured in battle.

She doesn't sound quite so "nuts" now, does she?

Marvin Said:

Kyle Said:

I'm 53, disabled...Vocational Rehab counselor seemed unsure that i would benefit...Reasons?

We Answered:

It's their job at the DVR to help those with disabilities find work; even those with bipolar and other psychiatric illnesses

She may not be familiar with the disabilities you have (bipolar) and may think due to misconceptions they can't help you.
Or, the higher ups who decide if you'll be accepted may accept you. They should. There are organizations they do business with and refer clients to who daily deal with all disabilities.

You can appeal if you're denied services. Appeal if you're denied.

To the person who said why she wants to work when she can get SSDI: Working pays more and you can live when working better than getting SSDI. With SSDI you cannot really live on what they pay you every month. I know because my brother gets SSDI and has to live at home with my mother. He is disabled and cannot work. He does not get enough to pay rent and other necessary expenses (food, gas, heat, car insurance, etc.) to live. $700 does not go far in this economy. It goes to help out my mom who is in her 80s.
Kudos to the woman for being able to go out there to find a job. She wants to be independent, just as "normal" people are. Not everyone with psychiatric illnesses can.

William Said:

Vocational Rehab. Counselor said I had Difficulitties?

We Answered:

Ask her and see how you can make it undifficult. She's an *** bc you shouldn't have to come here to find that out, she shudda told you right then and there.

Lillie Said:

What happens if you find a job on your own but don't tell your Vocational Rehab counselor immediately?

We Answered:

Nothing. The time for your services with voc rehab don't end when you get a job. They help you once you get a job too. Why you wouldn't want to tell I cannot imagine.
