Yes, there is always hope. Your case does not sound hopeless. You are just stuck in a rut. You just need a little help to get out. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel. You should be eligible for VESID, I mean, they are there to help you. I don't know what you can do as you fight your battle- maybe just get a small part time job and hope this economy starts it's upward climb again sometime soon. I'm not in a situation like you, though I wish I knew what exactly to tell you.

It is great to see that you are aiming for the top. What you have to do now, is make sure that you know what jobs NASA will be offering in ten years from now, and that you are interested in those jobs. Of course, you must also have the ability to successfully complete an engineering degree. It is a good idea to do the metal trade work that you are doing now but make sure that in senior high school, you take English, maths, physics, chemistry and graphics so that you will be offered a place in an engineering degree. NASA wants all types of graduate engineers. You could find the address of the NASA careers office and write to them, asking for their advice on what branch of engineering to study. In the meantime, do yourself a big favour and do NOT think that working for NASA is as romantic as shown in the motion picture, Apollo 13 --- most of the work is mathematics --- learn to love mathematics and you will be a mission controller.
