Chad Said:

How much can a certified cosmetologist make?

We Answered:

I have my license and so does my brother. You can make allot if you do it correctly. If you become good and focus on "coloring" especially long hair of women, you can make anywhere from $40 up to $150 per color job. My first year I believe my brother and I each made about $25,000. After 10 years we both approached $100,000 per year. It will take time to build up your clientele. So hang in there and be patient. Always have your business cards available everywhere you go and hand them out to friends. Its good to have wine or spirits around in the salon as well because some salon owners allow you to serve your clients a glass or two of wine or a beer or a mixed drink and once someone is getting their hair done, washed, cut, colored they usually are in a good mood and a glass of wine kind of loosens your client up to a bigger tip. Its simply a nice little technique for people to tip more. Become a good talker and listener as well because the people love a good story and they love telling stories. Further, always be friendly and pretend that you are happy to see the client and make them feel like they are special and the only person in the world when you are working on their hair.

You can also make money doing nails or giving a good make over. Its good to become good in make overs and if you do a makeover for someone and they love it, they will pay you very very well.

So in conclusion, don't expect much the first couple of years but at about year 3 your will do very well. Further its a great "cash" business so you will always have cash in your pocket at the end of the day.

Good luck to you.
