Medical Vocational School

Alan Said:

Is an accounting major viewed as a vocational major for med school?

We Answered:

As long as you get an a bachelors (and finish all of the prereqs), you are eligible to apply to med school. No bachelors degree would be considered vocational. I would, in fact, encourage being an Accounting major. Almost everyone applying to med school is a science major. Since it's so competitive to get in, making yourself standout is imperative to be a good applicant.

I am a first year med student and I was actually an Accounting major. The best part is, I was able to do internships in accounting (and made good money doing them). Now my CV (resume) is full of really interesting things like when I interned at a consulting firm or an oil and gas company. It might give me an edge when I'm applying to residency programs.

Also, every single time I go to shadow a doctor, they all tell me how smart I was for having a business degree and having experience in the business world. Several of them told me they wished they had done exactly that!

You're on the right track here, it doesn't have to be accounting but do something different and something you like - who knows, you may even like it more than medicine!
