Nursing Vocational Schools

Herbert Said:

Has anybody gone to a vocational nursing school?

We Answered:

I went to LPN school for one semester in Louisiana.

How was it? Like being on a roller coaster and you can't get off. We had a test every day. We had 6 subjects and we had a test in one of the 6 subjects evry day. These were multiple choice tests.

I had a 3.9 average, because I can do multiple choice tests easily, but one girl repeated anatomy and physiology twice and finally dropped out.

If you go toLPN school, be prepared to study constantly. That is literally the ONLY way to keep up. You cannot take a day off or the test the following day is going to be harder since you didn't study for it enough.

Andrea Said:

Is nursing school considered vocational school?

We Answered:

No, nursing school is a professional school. It is generally not considered a "vocational" school. However, it's possible what you're thinking of as a nursing school is not necessarily considered a professional school. I guess it would depend on the type of school and what classes you were attending. But generally, attending nursing school is considered a professional institution, not a training academy.

Sean Said:

What are the disadvantages of attending a vocational school for nursing? such as Kapplan or PIMA?

We Answered:

First of all, they are offering an Associate Degree in Nursing and the last time I checked, an Associate Degree in Nursing can be earned in about 2 1/2 years at your local community college or state university. Next, it is simply asinine to pay that kind of money for a degree from a crappy, for-profit place of business (sorry, I can't bring myself to call them a school, let alone a college). The "degree" they give you WILL NOT transfer to a state or private university should you want to earn a BSN.

After 15+ years in the hospital setting, let me assure you that hospitals won't hire someone from a place like Kaplan, Pima, MedTech, Brown Mackie (or any other "career college") when they have a pool of applicants from State Universities and respected community college programs. There are many new RN applicants out there and when you are up against candidates that have earned their degree from an NLN-accredited school or a well-respected university....who do you think they are going to hire? Not the nurse whose school couldn't get professional nursing accredidation.

Sweetie...those school counselors that told you how great their program at Pima or Kaplan is are not "counselors"...they are well-trained sales people whose only job is to sucker you into paying a fortune for their program.

Call or look up the website to your local community college or state university. They should have the tuition and classes listed right there....you should never have to "get an appointment" to find out how much a course costs or what classes you'll be taking!

Here's a link to find NLN-accredited schools in your state:

Please note that the "Pima County Community College" in Arizona, that is NLN-accredited for it's Associate Degree Nursing program, is not affiliated with Pima Medical Institute!!
