Vo Tech School
Danielle Said:
Vo-tech/CPI or stay at the high school? We Answered:
I like that idea of a Tech school half a day. It's part of my proposal. As I understand it in England you do that full time basically at 16 or 17 and the other go to College instead. There is a down side. Employers frown upon Tech educations because there is no pratical work experience.
If you're going to do it, choose wisely.
Entry level jobs are not easy to find.
To be frank they'd rather have a kid who did his own repair work on cars since he was 14 then someone with 2 years vocational training.
In short, UNSCHOOLING tends to work better.
I got vocational training in electronics and never got a job in that field.
A friend of mine who did it at home (his dad was an electronics engineer, but WITHOUT COLLEGE, showed him tricks) and then he worked his way up by doing low level tech jobs for money and now he runs the tech department for the Santa Clarita School system.
He's also an excellent guitarist, but a so-so singer.
He takes care of their Pro Tools system, recording studio and video production center.
He makes like $45K a year
And he has no college and no vocational training.
There are other options.
Community college is not overly expensive (maybe $2,000 a year total) and some states will let you be a nurse (RN) with a 2 year RN degree and that's $25,000 to start
You're NOT going to get a programming job with a VOCATIONAL education
It will teach you fundamentals
But MOST companies want a BS degree for a junior programmer.
I learned programming on my own, most BASIC, but some C++ and HTML
And at one job I simply did all the programming because they boss didn't know anything and his son in law (with a BA degree from Oxford who was a SENIOR programmer) didn't have the time to expand things so I did the data base design (my BASIC worked fine because BASIC is similar to both ACCESS and dBASE) and was the web masters.
I didn't get paid extra for it, but I did it.
The Dental Assistant has potential. But it don't pay much.
Do they have a CNA program, that's also good but don't pay much.
I'm not knocking their programs, it's probably good education and a nice idea
But employers won't be impressed by it. Especially big employers.
Your car repair course will PROBABLY get you a job at a Wal-Mart TLE at the same $7.50 an hour someone with no experience gets, but at least you'll know how to change an oil filter.
