Vocational Nursing Schools In California

Alternative ways to pay for school poor credit score?

We Answered:

Why go to a private expensive junior college for nursing @ $25,000 when you can go to a state junior college for less than $4,000?

Jackie Said:

I'm 18 and Want to become an RN, and get a Bachelor's in Nursing, But How do I start?

We Answered:

I've been a RN (ASN) for 17 years and here's my advice. I would not recommend getting your LVN first unless you are unsure about a nursing career. Getting your LVN then going straight into RN school means you will use your LVN minimally as you don't have to time to work much while getting your BSN. Also, getting your LVN might tempt you to blow off RN school because the money will be pretty nice. Unfortunately, you will need your BSN for any type of managerial position or advanced degree, so you might as well get it right away.
Nursing schools can be very competitive - there's a shortage of nursing instructors since you need an advanced degree to teach and the pay is not that great, so most people don't want to bother. If one school is full or you can't get in just call the next school on the list. You're young, with no dependents (I assume) so you can relocate to go to school.
Be aware, hospital nursing has a high burnout rate. But, it also pays well (in Cali at least - you guys were smart to get unionized) and if you are willing to forgo benefits it's possible to work part-time, which some people like if they have a family.
I wish you the best in your career.
