Vocational School For Sale

Kimberly Said:

What kind of course for college or vocational will be great for me!?

We Answered:

It's got to be right for YOU. As a university administrator who also does academic advising, I would declare "undecided" as my major for the first term or two. Take some basic foundational courses in English, math, psychology, sociology, etc. and do some research. Try going at it from this angle...what do you NOT want to be doing in 10 years. Also, do some research on careers you think you'd like and what degrees you'd have to have in order to do those jobs. If you're leaning toward the medical field but not the "blood and guts" of it (me, neither!!!) you might want to look at the health services administration field. This is more of the administrative/business end of the medical field...managerial positions in health care settings (hospitals, clinics, long-term facilities, etc). It's okay if you're not exactly sure what you want to do at this point. The main thing is to get back in class. There are plenty of those entry level courses you can take that will apply to many different majors so you won't be wasting your time by taking these courses, even if you're currently undecided.

PS...I was 34 when I decided what I wanted to be when I grow up. I had a family, worked, then decided to go back to school and earned a bachelor's degree in 2004 at the age of 34. I decided to go for the master's degree in higher education and now I'm nearly done with a Ph.D. in higher education and I work full-time with college students...I love my job! I know exactly how you feel. Hang in there, it WILL be worth it!

I need a receptionist job, so I can sit, because of my disability. Do I need to go to school?

We Answered:

You don't need a degree or certificate. You would just need to have some basic receptionist related skills. Most companies hiring for receptionists are looking for Microsoft Office software knowledge, typing skills, good phone skills (like being friendly and personable, etc), usage of computer and office equipment (like copy, fax, printer). These things can be self taught, or inexpensive college courses that teach software or typing. Some courses you can even do online. When I was younger I had several receptionist jobs and I never had a degree for it. As far as a medical receptionist, they may require some minor medical knowledge or medical terminology.

Good luck!
