Vocational Training School

Andy Said:

Community College versus Vocational School?

We Answered:

Even if you are only planning on going to go for a technical 2-year program, choose community over vocational school. Obviously some may differ, but most community schools require education outside the courses for the technical program, which in this case is Dental Assisting. You will likely have to take courses in English, Math, Science, and Humanities (and possibly others) while taking the courses required by the Dental Assisting program to get a degree from the community college. Considering the program you would like to pursue, this would probably be the more valuable route in the long-term.

Gail Said:

can a iep diploma be accepted into a career training class (vocationa school)?

We Answered:

The IEP is the document that detailed your needs and what the school would provide in services to help you obtain your educational goals.

I am assuming you have a diploma without the full credits of a regular HS Diploma. This is a tricky area -- and depends on the Vo-Tec school you are going to.

Best thing is to take your HS Transcript with you when you go to the Vo-Tec School and see what they will require to ensure you complete your training. You may need some additional courses or help with some subjects, because even construction fields need measuring skills, ability to read instructions, and to calculate or lay out angles (for example). Cooking schools require you to read temperatures, calculate times, figure out measurements, etc.
