You can't get better training than the U.S. Navy for welding. And, its not only free, they pay you to go to school. The Navy uses the most up-to-date technologies, which would give him a foot in the door for any welding job he could ever want.

As far as combat danger is concerned, its extremely low. U.S. ships are rarely, if ever, within firing range of the enemy. And he can always sign up for a short contract.

On top of all that, the Navy will pay for family housing, medical benefits, and real vacation time that he can spend with his kids.

Just have him see a recruiter to ask questions. Getting information obligates you to nothing!

Most of the time when you get undercutting it is due to speed (too fast). Moving on and not allowing the area to fill in. Sometimes it could also have to do with the angle of the presentation of wire. Play with both but I would bet that you are going too fast and afraid to let it fill in (trying to keep it from dropping out and looking like bubblegum).

Really it depends.... I;m sure if you were working as an auto mechanic for the best hand made cars out there, you would be making some descent coin. Same for welding, if you were welding (operator) for a company like NASA I'm sure you would also be making some decent coin. But really in both of those situation you may need more then just average college schooling. There is a range off salaries for each and are close to the same.

What you should be asking yourself, is what really interests you. Even if you do pick the job that pays you better money, if you don't like what you are doing then you made the wrong choice. And chances are, if you are interested in the subject, it would make it easier for you to excel, and maybe, you would be one of those people in a higher salary position.
