Jesus Said:

What is the best way to get my foot in the door at an I.T. or Technical position, without having college?

We Answered:

Apply for jobs as a lab monkey - setting up computers, running the cables, plugging them in, etc.

Beauty School or Technical College?

We Answered:

I would do some research and choose an accredited beauty school which also offers a job placement program. Also, check what each course offers and do a comparison.

Here are some links that may also help you in deciding which way to go in your cosmetology career:

Felix Said:

Which is better for IT career advancement, a technical college degree or certifications?

We Answered:

I would recommend performing the self-study route and acheiving the certifications yourself, but it depends...

You need to be the type of person that can learn material from a book and then utilize that knowldge. I would also suggest having equipment to practice on, otherwise someone from a technical school would have the hands on experience that you may not.

I myself went the self-study route and do not regret it one bit. I have 8 years experience, 7 of which are as a networking engineer and consider myself to be high up in the field. Also, you have one on me as I don't have any college experience.

Finding the motivation to study on your own can be hard at times, but if you want it... it's deffinitely acheivable. You gauranteee you that you would save money, and probably a lot of time depending on how quick you can study and take tests. I've worked with people in the past who were capable of passing tests on a weekly basis.

Hope this helps...

What is a "professional school" according to federal student aid?

We Answered:

Professional schools are typically those that award post-graduate professional degrees like med school, law school dental school, vet school.
I'm not sure if LVN/LPN program is considered a professional school, and I'm curious as to why you would want it to be one. Students in professional schools such as med school, law school, etc are not eligible for federal grants, only loans. However, they are able to borrow more in student loans perhaps that is what you are looking for.
If you're not sure, the safe thing to do is contact your school's financial aid office and ask them.

Clinton Said:

Is there anyone like me that would rather do labor intensive work vs. technical or professional?

We Answered:

That's a tough question. What type of salary are you looking for? There are some decent paying laborous jobs. Not great, compared to technical or office jobs. Here are some careers to look into:

1) Landscaping
2) Construction
3) Remodeling
4) Autobody
5) Warehouse

My brother makes $15/hr and you can make more with seniority at a warehouse or a distribution center. He just cuts open boxes and unloads inventory on the shelves. Hard work, but no much thinking there. Also, you can make 50% more if you work night or graveyard shift.

Also, you make more money if you can drive vehicles like bulldozers, dump trucks, fork lefts and cranes. Go to Salary.com and you may find a career that will fit your lifestyle.
