I think a lot can be gained by receiving your art degree from a University instead of an art school. I find that critics look for the three "C's" Craft, Composition and Concept. There are many artists that have amazing technical ability, but have absolutely nothing to say! In other words, they have no "concept." The material you learn from G.E. classes helps you grow as a person and an intelligent individual. It helps you create artwork down the road that has a point, and isn't just "nice to look at." Technical ability can be picked up through the internet, books, and aligning yourself with other artists whose skills you admire.
