Basically good idea, but misdirected solution.

Technical programs are not a cure-all. It depends on the technical program. Back when I started college in '69, the rage among vocational programs was card-punch; all the voc-tech schools advertised their card-punch programs like maniacs. Ten years later, after the invention of the PC and the floppy disk, card-punch became obsolete and all those former card-punchers needed career re-training. What a waste of time!

Yes, we need more people in the high-demand career programs--nursing, EMT, law enforcement, electronics, accounting--and there are prospects for jobs with even shorter training needs, like semi driver or plumber. But then again we need a raft of people with four-year or greater degrees in science, math, engineering, technologies, and medicine.

What young people need--and what I beg them to get in my college classes--is proper career counselling. They need the services of a professional who can test them for aptitudes and attitudes and present a list of rewarding, suitable professions to consider.

I've suggested to the chancellor of higher ed. in my state that one education reform we need is to set up career counselling centers in all community colleges, technical colleges, universities, and job centers--and have each one totally independent, ready to advise people about what careers are suited to them personally, what the demand and projected salary for each career will be, and what options they have regarding college programs or vocational training for those careers. There's some reason for optimism that something along those lines will be adopted.

The deal is, we lose 50% of students after their first year of college, mostly because they lack direction. Give a student a good, promising goal to start with, and we'll see much more success.
