Louisville's Public School System, JCPS (Jefferson County Public Schools), does not have specific vocational high schools but does have career specific programs at several of it's high schools that include Aircraft Maintenance, Banking and Financial Services, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Geographic Information Systems, Health Professions, Heavy Highway Science, Industrial Chemical Plastics Technology, Information Processing Technology, Machine Tool and Die Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Urban Agriscience Technology, as well as other fields.

We usually just ask WyoTech students to have a GED or high school diploma as a prerequisite. A basic knowledge of auto tech would be helpful, but a passion for learning is more important. Feel free to check out our website to learn more about the courses & programs we offer: http:www.wyotech.edu

We Answered:

It might, but the effects would be somewhat delayed, many European countries have active programs like this as well as a steady unemployment rate. A bigger problem w/our version of current capitalism is that real wages have been going down, & the concentration of wealth continues expanding.
There aren't any simplistic fixes, the world's become very complicated, & most of our sources of information have their own agendas, & can't be trusted.
Anyways, the benefits of being in a "service economy" are dubious for most of us, at best. Between consolidations (fewer people doing more things) & technological advances (fewer people doing more things) you can add more people looking for things to do & real estate prices that few can afford to things on & you've got something like what's going on today.
However, I believe that people made the mess we're in, & people can fix it, but the ones who truly benefit from this system are going to fight to keep robbing "the masses" every step of the way.

Great question. I would argue that middle-class ideas about education in America are horribly outdated. Every parent wants their kid in a nice white-collar job (doctor, lawyer, etc.), and there just aren't enough of those to go around. Trade schools still have a stigma of being "working class", unfortunately. I would certainly encourage my kid to go to trade school over a pricey liberal arts college (if I had any kids).
