Vocational Training Programs

George Said:

Is a degree from a four-year university better than vocational training?

We Answered:

Wow....after reading all these answers , it seems I have a mixture of advice.

First of all I have a B.A and B.Ed........went into teaching, hated it, did all sorts of other things, had a family, and then learned at the age of 50 that those little pieces of paper from a University opened doors that no one else at the age of 50 could even think about knocking on. So the degrees will always come in handy even though you may not think so right now.

Secondly, you really need to sit down with a student advisor, A T.A. that you can relate to , or a Professor who seems to be in touch with his/her students to give you some guidance on where to go from here if you don't think you have picked the correct majors.

Thirdly, if there is something in the Vocational area that REALLY turns your crank then do a lot of research (yes,,more homework) before you make a change. No sense in jumping from the frypan into the fire and throw a scholarship down the tubes if you are no better off in the long run.

Last, think very carefully about switching into another programme so you can use your Scholarship to the very best and walk away with a degree. I know the bills seem insurmountable at this time but you are obviously a very bright person to get a Scholarship and you will be the kind who stands out during an interview and gets the job to pay off those loans.

Oh and one more thing.........we would all like to spend our waking hours doing our passions (or hobbies) but unless you come up with a briliant idea to turn a hobby into full time job, it isn't going to happen.......not for you, not for anybody. Wishfull thinking only, I hate to burst your bubble

Anita Said:

is jobcorps in LA a good vocational training program?

We Answered:

hello, i cannot specifically say as to the jobcorps center in LA, but i can speak for the program itself. i am a jobcorp grad and found the program to be a very good learning experiance. some of the people that you will run into will be "knuckle heads" because a good portion of them are court ordered to be there. but just like anywhere else in life you gotta take the bad with the good. as long as your there to learn and improve yourself you can go far in the program. the teacher/instructors are very dedicated and have a genuine concern for your learning. the campus i went to was more like a community college. they didnt have the latest stuff but the facilities themselves are adequate and not "run down". hope this info helped

We Answered:

You can go if the program does not require a college transcript.

Create a vocational training program for a male prison?

We Answered:

Do you think this program does not belong in a womens' prison too?

Mario Said:

Does anyone know of any 6month or less, vocational training programs that are available?

We Answered:

Try computer training. There are centers out there that can get you certified in 6 months to a year. You could contract yourself out to do computer repair, desktop support, etc.

Try newhorizons.com or computertraining.com

good luck!

Are there any financial aid programs that will cover a 3 day vocational training and certification class?

We Answered:

Your employer should send you to the class. If you do not have an employer, and are trying to expand your skills cell tower climbing is a little odd. But anyway, falls from height is an OSHA focus area. You can check here on the OSHA website: http://www.osha.gov/dte/sharwood/2009_gr…
That is the Susan G. Harwood grant recipients for 2009, there may be listings for 2008 that address tower climbing.

Other options: You can approach the local ironworkers union or electric co-op (company) as they may have an equal training, ask the training provider if they have any grants available for the training (there were several grants in the American Recovery Act)or if you can pay with a payment plan. (most will not do this due to being burned in the past) Or you can offer to help instruct or be a demonstrator in some of their other programs.

To be clear I would hope that your employer would train you as they would identify the specific equipment you are going to utilize and a little more detail on what your job function is going to be.

**Edit** The only problem with the other advice about FASFA and student aid is if the facility is not certified by DoEd then they can not get Fin Aid. Good Luck.
