Another approach is to get a job in construction. You will get experience that others dont have and it will help you greatly in the long run.

Show up at a site 30 mins before the day starts wearing your work clothes and packing a lunch. Tell the forman what you know and why you can help.

There aren't any standard in this area. Companies usually have their own policy. In order to protect their investment, companies usually have some policy in place to protect their assets - knowledge and trained associates. For example, set a grace period before you can leave the company; ask associate to pay back training cost if leave within certain period; probation period when new hire is receiving training benefits and discounted compensation.

it depends on the job they find. Some jobs are very strait forward, from the box stuff. Other jobs will include more things that weren't covered in school. One example I know of is Embroidery, where the person would learn how to 'punch' an image to run on the machine.
