You should consider work/study programs. This simply means employment on campus. It works very nicely because your boss will understand when you have to work fewer hours because of homework overload. This is not to say you can be irresponsible. Doing so may give you a bad reputation and campus employers won't be happy - but, they are usually quite flexible.

As for employment outside the school, you will find that it will depend on the area you are in, and what unemployment is like. However, getting a job in the service industry, especially fast food will also be a forgiving environment for studies because so many employees who work in those places have the same situation. Its normal.

No problem earning what you need...

It could be hard to get a job that uses the skills you are going to school to learn. Most find that something working with their schedule is good enouogh.

apprenticeship is a way of learning while working. My husband, now retired, was accepted into the pipefitter/welder program when we were first married. He had been a mechinist, making airplane parts, but got very bored and not making enough money. the Local Union offered the five-year apprenticeship program (a time when he would go to school on evenings (4 times a week) and worked during the day. the Union Hall would find him a job, and during the five years, his salary augmented as he advanced.) After working over thirty years in the trade, he took a job as building engineer for a very large building in Miami, stayed there for 8 years, and now is re-retired.......(working harder now as landlord for his 6 duplexes he purchased to supplement his retirement income......and keep him out of the house!) At present, our son is working as 1st year apprentice, but his program is a bit different. For 5 years, he will be going to school all day Saturday and all Day Sunday once a month. I think this is better than going to school every night....specially if he plans on getting married and raise a family. Our grandson wants to join the union also and go to a new program being offered. He wants to be a welder. His schooling will be for 6 mos, 4 or 5 days a week from early am until 5 pm. He will not be able to work while he is doing this because it is far from home (long drive) but at the end of the program, he will be accepted as a 3rd year apprentice with 3rd year apprentice pay scale. I think the programs and pay scales are a little different in different parts of the country. It is hard and challenging work.....a good welder consideres his work an art.
